Monthly Favourites - November

mystringaling nov faves

It's been a few months since I last did a 'favourites' post, truth be told I don't change my routine that much & haven't bought many new products until recently. However, this month has seen a few new things which I really love & now are makeup bag staples of mine.

Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua Foundation
This is my go-to foundation when I need to do my makeup quickly. Brilliant light coverage & long-lasting. See my full review here.

Benefit Fine One One
I've recently been using the middle watermelon shade in this stick as a lip colour. It is a little drying, but with lashings of lip balm it's a really lovely subtle pink.

Rimmel Stay Matte Powder
A recent edition but a goodun, plus super cheap! Full review here.

Müller Eyelash Curlers
Another cheap product in my makeup bag but really good. My first pair lasted forever so I thought I'd spend another 3/4€ & treat myself to another pair.
Review coming soon...

Elf Warm Bronzer
Really lovely winter bronzer. Leaves my skin looking glowing & radiant (not bad for £4, eh?)
I particularly like combining this with MAC's Face & Body. Full review here.

NARS Angelika Blusher
An oldie but a goodie. A little touch of this on the apples of my cheeks really brightens up my face; the perfect partner for the Elf bronzer. Review coming soon...

Max Factor False Lash Effect Fusion Mascara
Amazing mascara. No mess, no fuss, just big long lashes. Perfect for mornings when you're in a rush. Read my full review here.

MAC Face & Body Foundation
This is my 'I've got some time to get ready so I'll do my makeup really nicely' foundation. I find that to build to decent coverage & blend seamlessly, this little baby takes a bit longer to apply. Not that I'm complaining, the finish is gorgeous, soft & dewy, & it looks good all day. Full review here.

What are your favourites this month? Let me know in the comments below.

Monday Review: Max Factor False Lash Effect Fusion

This Monday's review is the 'sister product' of a mascara I used to use a lot: Max Factor's False Lash Effect Fusion Volume & Length mascara £11.99 for 13.1ml.

mystringaling maxf mascara mon review

What Max Factor say...
Get set for the ultimate in lash glam. Max Factor introduces False Lash Effect Fusion; our first super-volumising and lengthening mascara in one.
False Lash Effect Fusion is the sister product to Max Factor’s award-winning False Lash Effect. It fuses the brand’s most celebrated and award winning IFX brush with an innovative fibre lengthening formula, which contains the nylon fibres found in real lash extensions along with lash plumping particles.
The breakthrough result is up to 2x* the volume and length for 100% lash glamour. It’s never been easier to create on-trend bold and glamorous eye looks.
  • Up to 100% more volume and 100% more length vs. bare lashes.
  • Wear it every day for a natural look.
  • No flaking or smudging gives lovely lash confidence.
  • Washes off easily.
  • Great choice for contact lens wearers.
*vs bare lashes
The bristles of the IFX brush dip into the formula and are gently coated before the wand softly glides across every lash, allowing you to take lash glam to new lengths! The buildable formula lets you dial up the drama to suit any occasion; so go on and plump up your lashes and make a lash statement with False Lash Effect Fusion – Max Factor’s ultimate new volume and length mascara.

Results...
Until looking at the applicator really closely, I didn't realise that there were tiny fibres in the mascara. If I had known, I'm not sure I'd have wanted to use it (anyone else read the blurb & worry about bits getting in their eyes?) However, having used the product for a few weeks now I can safely say that nothing has ever gone into my eyes *phew* & there's absolutely no fall out on to your under eye area/cheeks. This mascara is amazing! My lashes look full, long & very black all day long, keeping me looking wide awake, even if I'm not feeling it.

Overall...
I would give this mascara
I've been using Benefit's 'They're Real' for so long that I was a bit unsure about using another mascara, but whilst I think the applicator of 'They're Real' is a bit better, I actually think Max Factor's formula is much better. If I put 'They're Real' on my lower lashes it would always transfer to under my eyes, whereas False Lash Effect Fusion has a lot more staying power. Big thumbs up from me!

Have you tried this mascara? What did you think? I'd love to hear your thoughts, especially if you've tried 'They're Real' too :)

Munich Adventures: Tierpark Hellabrunn - Munich Zoo

mystringaling zoo

Last Friday I had a rare day off so we decided to go to the zoo. I couldn't believe how many animals we saw, considering it was about 1ºC outside *brr!*

If you're in Munich, in summer or winter, I would definitely recommend going to the Tierpark, there's even a Biergarten there :)

Monday Review: Elf Baked Bronzer & Elf Warm Bronzer

Skin feeling a little dull during these dark days? Yep, mine too hence why I've decided to stock up on some new bronzers in the hope that they will brighten both my day and my face. The two up for review are both by Elf; first, their Baked Bronzer in 'Maui' £3.75 for 6g, and second, their Warm Bronzer, £3.75 for 12.3g.

First up: Baked Bronzer in 'Maui'

mon rev elf

What Elf say...
Create a healthy, shimmering sun-kissed look with our Baked Bronzers. Baked in an oven, these bronzers offer rich pigmentation for a beautiful effect. Using a brush, apply dry on the areas of the face where the sun would naturally hit for a subtle wash of colour. Or dampen a brush and blend in for a more vibrant effect. Build colour for desired look.

Results...
I've used this bronzer every day since buying it, I absolutely love it. The colour payoff is good without giving too much colour, so your face doesn't look muddy/dirty. The colour is also really buildable so if you do want a bit more bronze, you can do. The pictures of the shades on the Elf website aren't great so I was unsure of which colour to go for. Maui is quite a light bronze shade, perfect for fair-skinned gals, however I would probably usually go a shade darker when buying bronzer. It's also shimmery without making your face look sparkly, just the perfect amount to highlight where you've added a touch of colour.

Overall...
I would give this
This is the perfect winter bronzer, plus it's small, light & compact making it super easy to carry around in your makeup bag.

Second up: Warm Bronzer

mystringaling mon review elf warm

What Elf say...
Create a healthy looking glow all year round! The sheer soft powders provide the perfect hue of colour. Blend all 4 colours together to achieve a blend of perfection or choose your favorite colour or colours to mix, match and blend. Warm Bronzer- The warm shimmer that will bring a glow to your face. Ideal for summer or year-round. Cool Bronzer- The ideal selection of matte colours to achieve a natural looking tan. Ideal for winter or year-round. Golden Bronzer- An illuminating shimmer that is subtle and radiant. Ideal for summer or year-round. Dust onto cheekbones, cheeks and slightly around the edges of the face for a healthy bronzed look.

Results...
I bought a second bronzer, after adding the Baked Bronzer to my basket, because I knew Lisa Eldridge had used this in a tutorial & if it gets a thumbs up from Lisa, that's all the encouragement I need. This bronzer is similar in colour to the baked bronzer, it's light & the colour is very buildable. The difference with this quad of shades is the shimmer, there's a lot of it! That's not necessarily a bad thing, the overall effect makes your skin look glowing & radiant, which I love, however I probably wouldn't use this one every day.

Overall...
I would give this
I really like the colour & the added shimmer, plus the packaging is very sturdy (not unlike the NARS bronzer & blush compacts) & the mirror inside the compact is huge!

Have you tried either of these bronzers? What did you think? These are the first products I've used by Elf but I would definitely purchase others,
I might have to pick up a few more next time I hit British shores :)

2013 Book Review - November: Me Talk Pretty One Day

mtpod
Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris

I was introduced to the works of David Sedaris by my American friend, Katie. Having never heard of him before, reading a collection of his essays/memoirs seemed a little odd, however, after she described a passage to me from the book, explaining what "an Easter" was*, and laughing at the way she recounted it, I knew that Sedaris was probably going to be my cup of tea.

The book Me Talk Pretty One Day is, as previously mentioned, a collection of autobiographical essays. Split into two parts, the first deals with part of his childhood -- highlights of mine being his guitar lessons taught by a midget who, of course, asks him to name his guitar, Sedaris chooses 'Joan' -- and his later life living in New York, moving from job to job. I found these essays readable, at times funny, and also relatable. However, for me, the book really took off in 'Part Deux', when Sedaris goes on to discuss his time as an expat in France, and his experiences learning the French language. This, to me, was so relatable, I laughed so hard at his questioning of who decided the gender of nouns, & trying to get by using very basic French. Living in Munich, a lot of the scenarios he describes have happened to me or, no doubt, will happen one day. It's a strange feeling living abroad in a country where your first language isn't widely spoken, but Sedaris captures the highs & lows brilliantly.

Another of his more recent books is called Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls and I'm already laughing to myself about what this next collection might involve :)

Have you ever read anything by David Sedaris? What did you think?

Monday Review: MAC Face & Body Foundation

This week I'm reviewing another foundation (does anyone else love buying new foundations? Please say I'm not the only one!) The product in question is MAC's Face & Body, £21.50 for 50ml, in shade C1.

mystringaling mon review f&b

What MAC say...
A fluid foundation that provides low-to-medium buildable coverage and a flawless, natural satin-shine finish. Skin conditioning, water-resistant and long-wearing. Now available in two sizes, including the new 50ml.

mystringaling f&b col

Results...
A few things intrigued me about Face & Body -- the coverage, light-medium & fairly sheer; the size, available in 50ml (20ml bigger than the average foundation) + it's also available in a whopping 120ml; & finally the price, for the amount of product you're getting it's a snip compared to other high-end foundations which are closer to the £30 mark.

I'd read a few reviews of how's best to apply F&B & I'm glad I did; the consistency & texture is like no other foundation I've ever tried. Straight from the bottle it's very runny & watery. You can apply the foundation to your face straight from the bottle like this, slowly building layers & therefore building coverage, however you can also rub the foundation until it turns slightly sticky & the coverage is doubled or tripled. Doing this feels counterintuitive, really rubbing it in over areas where you require extra coverage shouldn't work but it does. I find it best to apply this with my fingers, however due to the consistency it can get a bit messy. The finish it slightly dewy, which I love, however if you're not a fan, a bit of powder gets rid of any shine. The shade is a brilliant match, like Chanel Vitalumiere, the foundation can be buffed out along your jawline so that the colour blends seamlessly. I was quite confused by MAC's shade range, as their cool & neutral shades are opposite to most other brand's labelling systems. The shade I bought, C1, is slightly yellow-toned however when I was colour matched the MUA said I could also get away with the opposite shade, N1, which is slightly pink-toned.

Overall...
I would give this foundation
Whilst I wasn't sure at first, I've grown to really love it. Due to the texture it does take a week or two to feel completely comfortable using it but the coverage is brilliant, it lasts a good 8 hours easily & can also be used on other parts of your body/neck (hence Face & Body), this is brilliant if, like me, your neck is a bit paler than your face & chest.

Have you tried Face & Body? What did you think? This is the first MAC foundation I've ever used, how do you think it compares to their other foundations?
I'd love to hear your thoughts!
