2013 Book Review - July: The Hundred Year Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared

100 yr old man

This month's review is of a book I read whilst on holiday, I wasn't quite sure what to expect (not your usual book title) but I was really pleasantly surprised (plus it was on special offer when I bought it, just 20p on the Kindle, bargain!)

The story follows Allan Karlsson who, on his hundredth birthday, decides he's had enough & climbs out of his window beginning a bizarre, incredibly funny and heart-warming journey. Whilst Allan decides where to go next, we are given insights into the centenarian's life thus far and bit by bit we begin to understand why he would choose to leave his retirement home in favour of something a bit more interesting.

One of my favourite aspects of this book was the fact that it was set in Sweden, to me this added a quirky charm to the narrative. If you are looking for a witty, light-hearted read with charm and brief history of world politics (it seems Allan has met just about everyone over his 100 years) I would definitely recommend this.

Have you read this book? What did you think? Let me know in the comments below :)

Monday Review: Vaseline Spray & Go Aloe Fresh Moisturiser

As soon as I spotted this in Boots I knew I had to try it, the new wonder moisturiser that is: Vaseline 'Spray & Go' body moisturiser, £4.99 for 190ml.

vaseline spray go

What Vaseline say...
Vaseline® Spray & Go™ Moisturizer is a line of quick, convenient spray lotions that moisturize deeply and absorb in seconds.  The revolutionary continuous spray-system dispenses lotion quickly and evenly for allover coverage.  The unique formula includes Stratys-3™ multi-layer moisture so lotion absorbs into skin with a few quick rubs. Skin is instantly moisturized, not greasy or sticky. Our Aloe Fresh variety is infused with pure aloe for healthy fresh skin in seconds!

Results...
I've used the cream version of this moisturiser before & absolutely loved it. It's perfect all year round but particularly good as a holiday aftersun (tip: put it in the fridge in your room for an extra cool, soothing feeling after a long day in the sun). The spray version smells & feels exactly the same as the cream, perhaps slightly thinner, however, no less moisturising. The spray can is super easy to use, even spraying upside down making it perfect for applying on your back/those harder to reach places. It rubs in really easily & doesn't leave your skin feeling sticky or greasy. The scent is also really fresh & uplifting, but not so strong that it interferes with the smell of your perfume. It's also available in 'Essential Moisture' - I presume this wouldn't have too much of a scent - & 'Cocoa Radiant' - another yummy holiday smell.

Overall...
I would give this moisturiser
If you're planning on going away on holiday buy this! It is the perfect aftersun product, really easy to apply & the perfect size to not take up too much room in your case. Despite being £2 more than the cream version, I would definitely repurchase the spray over the cream as it is a lot easier and more convenient to use. The only thing I would say, as a little bit of a warning, be careful if you spray this in a room with wood/tiled floors; the fine spray can settle on the floor making it super slippery so perhaps stand on a towel or some carpet.

Have you tried this product? What did you think? I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below

☀ Poolside/Beach Makeup ☀ - What's On My Face

holiday

I spent last week soaking up some sun in Lanzarote so I thought I'd share with you lovelies what I wore on my face whilst sunbathing. It can be hard to find the perfect beach/poolside makeup; you don't want anything too heavy but, if you're like me, the thought of sitting there naked-faced is a little terrifying. I found this combo perfect; light, natural & plenty of SPF, we don't want a face like an old leather shoe now do we?

poolside makeup

I picked up the concealer & BB cream in the airport, I'd wanted to try both for a long time so I couldn't resist when going through Duty Free (full reviews of both coming soon). The Bioderma suncream was a sample that I was given whilst stocking up on some more Sensibio cleansing water. I was surprised to see that it was tinted so, if you have a beautiful complexion naturally, you could slap this on & go -- perfect for a quick holiday daytime makeup. I'm not a fan of a full makeup look for the poolside, however, you can't go wrong with a few coats of a good mascara to make you look a little more fresh-faced & 'They're Real' is perfect!

Have you used any of these products? What are your poolside/beach makeup essentials?

Friday I'm in Love: Most Wanted #22

So, after a brief hiatus I am back with another most wanted item.
This week I thought I'd be topical & search for a Kate-esque Jenny-Packham-a-like dress (whyyy do you have to be one of a kind, lovely dress? *sigh*)

If you're not sure what I'm referring to (how?) see below...

What did you think of Kate's look as she left the Lindo Wing with baby George in her arms?
Personally, I think she always looks stunning, the woman can do no wrong in my eyes

The Best Shorts Ever.
Where to buy...

From the moment I saw them I knew I wanted them; I have been lusting after these shorts for months. Literally. But £54 is pricey even for beautiful shorts like these. Oh why can't I be a rich girl? P.S. I will gladly accept donations towards these shorts :)

Monday Review: L'Oréal Nude Magique CC & BB Creams

Hello lovely readers! I haven't done a Monday Review for a few weeks because I've been trying to cut back on my spending & so haven't been buying many new products to try, however, this Monday's review is of some much anticipated products (& a bit of an oldie) from L'Oréal: their Nude Magique CC creams and their Nude Magique BB cream, both retailing at £9.99.

loreal review main

Let's start with the CC creams, firstly the 'anti-redness' CC cream.

loreal green CC

What L'Oréal say...
The magic Smart Pigment Capsules in a feather-light green hydrator transform into foundation on application. Helps neutralise the appearance of redness. A perfect nude look with buildable light-weight coverage.

Results...
This is the first CC cream that I'd ever tried, & if it was anything like BB cream samples I'd previously tested, I wasn't expecting much. However, I do have quite a lot of redness across my nose & onto my cheeks so was interested to see how this would work. Low & behold I was pretty blown over. The strange green-toned liquid slowly turned into a light tan colour on my face & covered pretty much all of my redness. I applied the CC cream to all of my face & was taken aback by how good the colour match  & coverage was. The only downside I found was in places where I'd applied a little more, to build the coverage, here there there was still a slight green tinge which left my complexion looking quite sallow, not good!

Overall...
I would give this CC cream
I was really impressed with the technology in general & especially how well it covered the redness in my skin whilst being very lightweight & thin in consistency. I would, however, not suggest applying this to your whole face as it can leave you looking a bit peaky.

Secondly is the Nude Magique 'anti-fatigue' CC cream.

loreal orange cc

What L'Oréal say...
The magic Smart Pigment Capsules in a feather-light apricot hydrator transform into foundation on application. Helps wake up the complexion. A perfect nude look with buildable light-weight coverage.

Results...
After trying the 'anti-redness' CC cream I was expecting big things from the 'anti-fatigue' offering, sadly I was very disappointed. The product immediately looked orange and, once I'd rubbed it into my skin, was left looking like an Umpa Lumpa. I can't comment of whether my complexion looked 'woken up' because, frankly, I looked so ridiculous!

Overall...
I would give this cream
I was really disappointed by this CC cream. It seems that L'Oréal haven't quite harnessed the CC 'magique' as the two samples of CC cream I tried were drastically different in result.

Finally is the Nude Magique BB cream. This came out way before the new CC creams and has received extremely mixed reviews.

loreal bb

What L'Oréal say...
Our first self adjusting BB cream. Moisturising skincare transforms to lightweight foundation. Skin looks flawless and even with a dewy glow.

Results...
I really want to like this. Ever since BB creams came out I've wanted to believe the hype but the only one that has delivered, for me, so far is the Dior BB cream & that's approx. £30 & more of a lightweight foundation. The L'Oréal BB cream does not look appealing when it's first squeezed from the packet/tube; it's a white/grey shade & looks fairly gritty. I'd read other reviews of this where people had said they could feel the 'pigment capsules' on their skin, making it feel uncomfortable. Honestly, I didn't notice this at all, I was more taken by the colour. The sample I had was shade 'medium' (the BB cream coming in both 'medium' & 'light' shades), I knew that 'medium' would be too dark as I'm quite fair, however, it was another orange moment for me. I found that the orange had a pinky undertone so I wasn't able to see how good the coverage was across the redness in my nose. I've heard that the 'light' shade is also fairly dark and orange-toned but I would be interested to try it, as I said, I do want to like this BB cream!

Overall...
I would give this BB cream
I can't say definitively whether I love it or hate it due to the fact that the colour was completely wrong.

Have you tried any of these creams, BB or CC? What were your thoughts? There is also a third CC cream that L'Oréal have launched which is mauve toned for 'anti-dullness', has anyone given that a go? If you're a fair-skinned gal like me, & have tried the BB cream, what did you think?
Let me know in the comments below :)
