Transitional Occasion Wear

So, coming up over the next couple of months I have a wedding and my graduation to find an outfit for: welcome 'transitional' occasion wear. We all know how changeable the British weather can be so I've put together 7 outfit options, some with interchangeable items, that will work for a surprisingly sunny September day or an awfully rainy October afternoon.

Outfit 1 - Patterned dress in autumnal colours (click images to enlarge)

Outfit 2 - Statement floral trousers

Outfit 3 - Co-ordinating patterned top and trousers

Outfit 4 - Co-ordinating floral blazer and shorts

Outfit 5 - Tailored trousers

Outfit 6 - Graphic print shift dress

Outfit 7 - Turquoise dress or playsuit

Outfits 1, 4, 6 & 7 (with the dress) could all be worn with opaque tights if the weather's really awful or if the weather's feeling kind maybe even a bare leg!

What are your favourites? Do you think any of the outfits are more suited to a wedding or graduation? Let me know in the comments below :)

Love as always,

If there's one book you must read... Week #21

Book #21 -- The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner by Stephenie Meyer

Chosen by Jemma (+ it's her birthday today so send her a birthday tweet :))

What Jemma says: It's a short spin-off novella to accompany the Twilight saga by Stephenie Meyer. It was easy to read & perfect as a holiday/beach read.

Amazon blurb: 'The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner is the riveting story of Bree Tanner, a vampire first introduced in Eclipse, and the darker side of the world she inhabits. The novella chronicles the journey of members of the newborn vampire army from their preparations to close in on Bella Swan and the Cullen family to its unforgettable conclusion.

Fans of The Twilight Saga will be enthralled by the riveting story of Bree Tanner, a character introduced in Eclipse, and the darker side of the newborn vampire world she inhabits. In another irresistible combination of danger, mystery and romance, Stephenie Meyer tells the devastating story of Bree [...]. 'I'm as surprised as anyone about this novella,' said Stephenie Meyer. 'When I began working on it in 2005, it was simply an exercise to help me examine the other side of Eclipse, which I was editing at the time. I thought it might end up as a short story that I could include on my website. Then, when work started on The Twilight Saga: The Official Guide, I thought the Guide would be a good fit for my Bree story. However, the story grew longer than I anticipated, until it was too long to fit into the Guide.'

I'm not a huge Twilight fan although I'm happy to admit that I've seen the first three films and started to read the first book in the saga (unfortunately it didn't rivet me & so I didn't finish it). However, the books and films alike have been incredibly popular and, much like Harry Potter before it, fans have an insatiable thirst for extra literature about the characters and their back-stories. With this in mind, I think this is an interesting book for anyone who is a fan of the series.

Have you read it? Are you a fan of the Twilight saga or are you sick of vampire literature? Let me know in the comments below or on twitter, and don't forget to tell me your 'must read' book :)

To chop or not to chop, that is the question!

Right kids I've got a dilema, what to do with my lovely locks? I'm considering having a fringe cut but I can't make my mind up :(

Hair inspiration...

The more I look at these photos the more I'm inclined to take the chop (Daisy Lowe why your hair so good!?)

My second dilema is whether to re-ombre my hair. Back in good ol' Deutschland I did a DIY ombre jobby which, in hindsight, probably wasn't the best idea (my hair's only just about recovered from all the bleach :/) BUT I now have the option of getting it done by a professional so I don't know whether to take the plunge again?

What are your thoughts on ombre hair? Is it a bit "done"? Help me decide!

If there's one book you must read... Week #20

Book #20 -- A Storm of Swords by George R. R. Martin

Chosen by my pal, Ed :)

What Ed says: 'Any of the 'A Song of Ice and Fire' books are great, A Storm of Swords is my favourite so far -- a healthy mix of drama, cliffhangers, battles and whores haha! B****cks to 50 Shades!'

Amazon blurb: 'Here is the third volume in George R. R. Martin’s magnificent cycle of novels that includes A Game of Thrones and A Clash of Kings. As a whole, this series comprises a genuine masterpiece of modern fantasy, bringing together the best the genre has to offer. Magic, mystery, intrigue, romance, and adventure fill these pages and transport us to a world unlike any we have ever experienced. Already hailed as a classic, George R. R. Martin’s stunning series is destined to stand as one of the great achievements of imaginative fiction.

A STORM OF SWORDSOf the five contenders for power, one is dead, another in disfavor, and still the wars rage as violently as ever, as alliances are made and broken. Joffrey, of House Lannister, sits on the Iron Throne, the uneasy ruler of the land of the Seven Kingdoms. His most bitter rival, Lord Stannis, stands defeated and disgraced, the victim of the jealous sorceress who holds him in her evil thrall. But young Robb, of House Stark, still rules the North from the fortress of Riverrun. Robb plots against his despised Lannister enemies, even as they hold his sister hostage at King’s Landing, the seat of the Iron Throne. Meanwhile, making her way across a blood-drenched continent is the exiled queen, Daenerys, mistress of the only three dragons still left in the world. . . .

But as opposing forces manoeuvre for the final titanic showdown, an army of barbaric wildlings arrives from the outermost line of civilization. In their vanguard is a horde of mythical Others—a supernatural army of the living dead whose animated corpses are unstoppable. As the future of the land hangs in the balance, no one will rest until the Seven Kingdoms have exploded in a veritable storm of swords. . .'

I've recently been really tempted to start reading the 'A Song of Ice and Fire' novels, deliberately not watching the tv series that's been made of A Game of Thrones (weeell you need to read the book first, non?) Have you read any of these books or seen the tv series? What did you think?

If this doesn't really sound like your cup of tea, what is? Let me know your 'must read' book in the comments below or via twitter :)

Happy reading!

August Favourites

This month's favourites are once again all beauty products, some high-end, some lower-end/budget (who doesn't love a bargain?!)

01. Love Hearts x MUA 'Sweet Kiss' lip balm, £2.

What MUA say: MUA have collaborated with Love Hearts to bring the sweetest lip balm collection in gorgeous collectable pots. With a moisturising formula and a hint of colour these balms are a must have.'

Why it made the favourites list: This is definitely more of a gloss than a balm, don't be fooled! However, it's a really gorgeous colour, very subtle + for £2 you can't go wrong :)

02. MAC lipstick in 'Blankety', £14.

What MAC say: 'Colour plus texture for the lips. Stands out on the runway. Simmers on the street! What made MAC famous.'

Why it made the favourites list: I am not a lipstick person, I'm constantly worried that it's on my teeth & I prefer having a subtle/nudey lip colour, HOWEVER, this lipstick is incredible! It's the exact same shade as my natural lip colour so it looks really natural, plus the texture is really smooth and comfortable. I've definitely been converted!

03. Skin Wisdom 'Skin Essentials' night cream, £2.50.

What Skin Wisdom say: 'Nourishing, non-greasy Night Cream easily absorbs and is suitable for all skin types. Wake up to radiant skin, as fruit acids help to renew the skin's surface and a moisturising complex helps replace moisture lost during the day.'

Why it made the favourites list: I'd not used Skin Wisdom before but for the price I thought I'd give it a go & I was very pleasantly surprised. Really nice texture, not too greasy and left my skin really smooth and soft.

04. Skin Wisdom 'Skin Essentials' light 24 hour moisturiser, £2.50.

What Skin Wisdom say: 'Light non-greasy moisturiser suitable for all skin types and helps provide 24 hours of moisturisation. Containing mineral enriched spring water and comforting chamomile, it absorbs easily into the skin.'

Why it made the favourites list: This is a really nice light moisturiser. It wasn't at all greasy and left my skin feeling lovely :)

05. NARS Sheer Glow foundation in 'Santa Fe', £29.50.

What NARS say: 'A glowing, satin-finish foundation with sheer and buildable coverage that immaculately evens skin tone. Replete with skincare benefits and the NARS Complexion Brightening Formula, it leaves skin hydrated, more luminous, softer and smoother. Used daily, Sheer Glow Foundation improves skin's brightness and texture.'

Why it made the favourites list: I love this foundation! It's beautiful and light, completely non-cakey and a little really does go a long way. It doesn't settle into creases either, specifically around my nose. The cherry on the top (for me anyway) is the fact that this foundation doesn't contain any SPF (yaaaay no more ghost face!!)

Have you tried any of these products? What are your thoughts? Let me know in the comments below :)

Du bist mein Leibster

OHAI! I'm sure most of you (if not all) have seen the 'Liebster Award' doing the rounds on people's blogs, non? No one seems to be sure where it came from and despite wanting to be cynical I can't help but appreciate the sentiment.

In short: 'Liebster' is German for sweetheart but it comes from 'lieben' to love/to prefer. Long story short, the Liebster Award is like a pat on the back from another blogger who rates what you're doing and for this nomination I'd like to thank the lovely Lola Rose :)

To start with I have to tell you 11 things about myself (why 11 I do not know?!)

01. I, like Lola Rose, am an only child (often thought as a nipper that the term was 'lonely' child, how tragic, haha!)
02. I've just graduated from uni with a 2:1 in English with German.
03. I can speak English and German and am currently learning Italian too.
04. I love literature and have recently joined a book club (I don't tell many people though as it makes me sound like a middle-aged woman!)
05. I love to travel and have been to Italy 4 times in the last 12 months (my boyfriend lives there too which is a bonus :))
06. I haven't seen my natural hair colour in over a decade :/
07. I love fake eyelashes & was called Charlee Lashes when I first moved to uni.
08. I can pull a pint ;)
09. I have my feet tattooed. I've never actually blogged about my tattoos (I also have a small one at the top of my spine) but I absolutely love them.
10. I have an amazing little cat called Maggie, I love her!
11. And finally, I want to see more of the world. I spent a year living in Germany in 2010/11 and it was the best experience of my life, I'm itching to get away again. I'm currently looking for jobs across all of Europe, seeing new places and experiencing new things is what makes life exciting for me.

Now, Lola Rose's questions for me:

01. Q: Do you watch youtube videos? If so who is your favourite youtuber?
A: Yes I do watch a lot of youtube videos (some of my guilty pleasures here), my favourite would have to be Lexi sototallyvlog/fashionflith, she lives the kind of life I can only dream of & has amazing style too.

02. Q: How long have you been blogging?
A: I've been blogging since I was in Germany, my first post was back in February, 2011.

03. Q: What makes you follow a good blog?
A: It's always about the first impression for me, if a blog is cluttered with tiny images I won't bother looking at it. I like things to be clear, whether that's with large photos or a really simple layout or whatever. I also love blogs with beautiful photography, even if it's just an OOTD, if it's beautifully shot I'll want to keep going back to it.

04. Q: What is your favourite nail polish brand?
A: L'Oreal, hands down! Their 'Resist and Shine Titanium' polishes are brilliant.

05. Q: Who do you look up to in the fashion world?
A: To sound cliché, anyone who dresses how they want without caring what people think of their style is really inspiring to me. As for style icons I've always loved Gwen Stefani, she can do relaxed tom-boy and beautiful feminine glamour, she's incredible!

06. Q: Do your friends know you have a blog?
A: Yes, my close friends do + anyone who follows me on twitter, but I don't post links to my blog on facebook. I don't think blogging should be a popularity contest, I'd rather people came across my blog because they were looking for something I was talking about, rather than asking all of facebook to follow my blog etc.

07. Q: Lipstick or gloss?
A: I've always been a gloss girl, however, I think I may have recently been converted to lipstick (see my August favourites early next week to find out what did it).

08. Q: How many blog posts do you post a week?
A: I tend to schedule a lot of my posts because I find it means that I always have regular content. I try to schedule a post 3-4 times a week :)

09. Q: Do you think blogging has given you confidence?
A: I don't necessarily think it's given me any more confidence, I've always been a chatty friendly person who's not afraid to meet new people. I do think that blogging has given me the perfect outlet to constantly write though which, for me, is much more important. It's good to write about the things you love and then receive feedback from your peers.

10. Q: Do you go to college? If so what are you studying?
A: I did go to college where I did my A-levels and I've just finished uni where I studied English literature and German.

11. Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
A: Hopefully in a job that I love, having seen a lot more of the world.

The bloggers I would like to nominate are:
01. Danielle - http://www.misssunshinesparkle.blogspot.co.uk/
02. Julie - http://sweetsaremyweakness.blogspot.co.uk/
03. Angela - http://hairsprayandhighheels.blogspot.co.uk/
04. Zoe - http://wondrous-marvellous-obsession.blogspot.co.uk/
05. Mariam - http://themaryfairy.blogspot.co.uk/
06. Natalie - http://raveorrant.blogspot.co.uk/

It's only 6 (not the magical number 11!) but I really like all 6 blogs :)

My questions to you, ladies, are:
01. Why did you start your blog?
02. What do you love about other people's blogs?
03. What do you hate about them?
04. Apart from blogging, what's your favourite thing to do?
05. What do you find is the best way to gain new followers?
06. Do you prefer blogs or youtube vlogs, and why?
07. What is your favourite luxury beauty product?
08. What is your favourite budget beauty product?
09. What is the one beauty product that you could not live without?
10. If you were given £1000 what is the first thing you would buy?
11. What's the one tip that you think everyone should know?

Wowee! That ended up being a rather lengthy post! Have you been nominated for a 'Liebster Award' previously? What are your thoughts on the whole thing? + were there any questions here that caught your eye? If so, let me know the question and your answer in the comments below :)

Thank you again to Lola Rose, you little cutie pie!

In Dublin's fair city, where the Guinness is so pretty...

Dublin, what a city! I think I'm a little (a lot) in love; the people, the places, the food & drink, what more could you want from a city?! My personal highlights were: the Guinness Storehouse (for obvious reasons), Temple Bar (see previous reason), the sightseeing bus we went on (brilliant way to see the whole city without getting achy legs and feet), and the Dublin Writers' Museum (anyone who knows me knows that I'm a lit geek!)

And the pictorial highlights...

Someone please take me back!

Aaaaand for those wondering, today's title is from this little ditty :)

100 posts & counting!

OK, so Liz hasn't sent me a celebratory telegram for my centenary BUT it's still an important milestone for me nonetheless. I began this blog whilst studying in Germany and it has become (to sound incredibly cliché) my "baby". I love blogging -- writing about the things that I love -- and the whole community that comes along with it. I'd like to welcome, and thank, my newest followers, and here's to the next 100 posts and more!

If there's one book you must read... Week #19

Book #19 -- Birds of Prey by Wilbur Smith

Chosen by the Ital, Boris :)

What he says: "I like this book because it's a mix of adventure and history: an epic of love, violence, hatred, and deception. Wilbur Smith can take you back into the past and make you feel the atmosphere of those times of war and action with his unique style of writing, his accurate way of describing places, the power of Africa, and his realistic way of describing actions, scenes of violence, and sex. He really makes you live the life of the central characters, you feel their hate when they are beaten unfairly and the triumph when they overcome adversity."

Blurb*: 'It is 1667 and the mighty naval war between the Dutch and the English still rages. Sir Francis Courteney and his son Hal, in their fighting caravel, are on patrol off Southern Africa, lying in wait for a galleon of the Dutch East India Company returning from the Orient laden with spices, timber and gold.
From the very first pages, Wilbur Smith spins a colourful and exciting tale, crackling with tension and drama, that builds to a stunning climax.
Packed with vivid descriptive passages of the open seas, and an extraordinary cast of characters, Birds of Prey is a masterpiece from a storyteller at the height of his powers.'

#Wishlist Make-up Brushes

I have a love/hate relationship with make-up brushes, I go through phases of using them but always end up going back to using my fingers (I'm talking about foundation specifically). However, recently there's been a plethora of posts extolling the virtues of applying foundation with a stippling brush and I won't lie, I'm curious. The brands of choice appear to be Real Techniques (£11.99) and Sedona Lace ($14.95, from the US, approx. £9.50).

So what do the brands say?
Real Techniques: 'This dual-fiber brush is the trade secret for creating airbrushed, high-definition results with all types of makeup: look pixel-perfect even in harsh light'.

Sedona Lace: 'A flat top buffer brush is everyone’s best friend when it comes to foundation. The compact, flat top helps buff in powder, liquid, or cream foundation for an airbrushed finish. No need to worry about liquid or cream foundation staining these brown, synthetic bristles. You can also use this brush on its side to get a precise, contoured edge on the cheekbones.'

I'm a sucker for promotional blurb but having seen so many people recommending this type of brush for foundation application it has gone right to the top of my wishlist.

Do you use a stippling brush? How do you find the application of your foundation using it, compared to using your fingers or a sponge? Let me know in the comments :)

♡ Label Lust ♡ -- Dolce & Gabbana

Number 5 in my 'label lust' list is probably my absolute favourite; so decadent, so beautiful, and so italian: Dolce & Gabbana.

Aside from the fashion, what I love about the designer duo is their ad campaigns. They're so full of vibrancy and tell such a story. To my absolute delight I found that you can download their ad campaigns, including a montage screensaver (love it!)

This is why I love them...

My favourites from their A/W13 collection are:

Decadent golds, strong printed tapestry, and beautiful lace, what is there not to love?

And finally, the accessories...

Sig. Domenico Dolce & Sig. Stefano Gabbana have stolen my heart with their stunning collection, now to dream up a way to afford some of it!

Let me know your thoughts in the comments below :)
